Because everybody enjoys a night out at the club, Pioneer Electronics decided it was time to bring it to you! Their exclusive MIXTRAX technology puts a new spin on one’s in-car music experience and was designed for music lovers and those nightlife lovers. The innovative proprietary technology combines Pioneer’s rich DJ heritage with their audio segment and creates a nonstop mix of an entire music library to create a club-like atmosphere.
Music is taken from an iPhone/iPod or USB/SD device and plays it back with added transitions and effects creating a virtual DJ inside select Pioneer products. The music collection is analyzed and various musical attributes, including tempo and beats per minute (BPM), are identified, which the software then tags and creates an assortment of playlists categorized in different genres and musical styles such as Beat, Chill and Thump. The software is so advanced that it then identifies the best transition points of each song that it seamlessly mixes into the next track, much like a DJ’s live performance. But that’s not all, since MIXTRAX includes illumination buttons (as well as the display of the in-car CD receivers) that pulsate and change color according to the music to create different light effects similar to what you’d experience at a party.
To showcase the new MIXTRAX technology, a special demo vehicle was built by Pioneer, in collaboration with Five Axis, which debuted at the 2012 CES show. “As we started thinking about how to build a demo vehicle, we contemplated about how we really needed a rolling lounge or rolling nightclub, which was essentially the inspiration behind our MIXTRAX build,” describes Ted Cardenas, VP of Marketing, Car Electronics Division. “We needed a large vehicle to give us that visual and sound impact so that basically led us on the path to find either a van, RV or big truck. We finally decided on the Toyota Sienna, aka The Swagger Wagon, for the base model and wanted to build something like an ultra lounge on wheels.”
Not only did the “Swagger Wagon” provide enough interior room, but it also featured more aggressive exterior styling cues, with its sleek lines and factory body kit, than other models that were being considered, Cardenas adds. For the exterior, specially designed graphics by Anyone Collective were made and wrapped by Sticky Fingers Design, while the interior was fully gutted to create the club/lounge-like atmosphere. An all white interior was created, with light effects you’d find in a dance club.
“The lighting actually pulsates with the beat of the music,” Cardenas says. “We also installed a variety of Pioneer car equipment which includes five subwoofers, a multitude of amplifiers, an array of speakers and a MIXTRAX head unit that drives all the equipment installed in the rear of the vehicle.” There are two plush Five Axis custom designed chaise lounge chairs facing the rear of the vehicle for people to relax in and experience the sensory overload provided by the MIXTRAX system. Proper stance is completed with an AirRunner Suspension combined with a set of 20-inch FIVE:AD S5:F wheels wrapped in Yokohama S.drive 245/35R20 tires.
Pioneer is no stranger to incorporating their DJ gear into some car builds, but this one stands above the rest. “All of the previous ones were more of a live DJ playing from equipment built into the car, whereas this one replicates that without the need for an actual physical DJ doing everything. It makes anyone the DJ now.”
The entire build took three months to complete so that it would be ready in time for the 2012 CES show in Las Vegas. It was named one of the 10 Best Cars at the show and can now be seen at the 2012 DUB Show Tour stops. “The end result was a great success,” Cardenas says. “It sounds amazing and plays to the same levels you would find in a club, while providing that same sort of musical experience. The build really tells the story of MIXTRAX and what it is and crosses that gap between the nightclub and car experience.”
The MIXTRAX technology is available in the following Pioneer products: DEH-P7400HD CD Receiver; DEH-P8400BH CD Receiver; AVH-P8400BH Audio Video Receiver; and via Pioneer’s AppRadio (SPH-DA01) iPhone Receiver. When used with the MIXTRAX iPhone App, it compares the tracks stored in the device’s music library with Pioneer’s list of analyzed music that’s stored in its Internet services to identify musical traits. It then creates custom playlists with DJ-style effects and transitions for a nonstop mix of songs. The mix can then be played back and controlled via the Pioneer AppRadio.
