SpoCom 2009 Recap
Despite a global recession and the auto industry’s current state of contraction, the aftermarket tuner industry appeared to be in pretty healthy shape, as reflected by the scores of top import show cars, models, vendors and large crowds. At this year’s SpoCom at the Long Beach Convention Center held on Sunday, June 14, 2009, more than 2,000 trade attendees, 6,500 consumers, 350 show cars and 150 vendors packed every square inch of the Convention Center.
The slippin' and slidin' tuner motorsport du jour of drifting was well represented at SpoCom by competitors from the increasingly popular Formula D series. At the FD rig, Yasu Kondo's Lemon Chex Toyota AE86 Corolla, Ross Petty's Garage Boso/Falken Silvia, Mike Essa's DTC Performance/Maxxis LS1-powered Mazda FC RX-7, Ken Gushi's RS*R Scion tC, Ryuji Miki's A'PEXi/Hankook FD RX-7, Eric O'Sullivan's RockStar/Hankook Subaru Impreza WRX STi and Taka Aono's Technosquare AE86 impressed show goers.
Competition machinery from the various time attack championships was also featured at this year’s SpoCom. Redline had a huge booth space, where it showed off Billy Johnson's FX Motorsports Development Acura NSX and JC Meynet's Harman Motive STi, as well as many others. There were numerous tuner industry personalities at this year’s SpoCom, too, like drivers Kyle Mohan and Justin Pawlak and Mazda's Team Bergenholtz.
Unlike SEMA in Vegas, SpoCom is open to the public which provides enthusiasts face to face time with manufacturers to get advice or ask technical questions and of course to see which booth had the hottest cars and models. But Spocom is not without entertainment as well. In addition to the car show competition, SpoCom also featured their highly popular fashion show, urban dance competition, bikini contest, lingerie show and more!
